Short courses of systemic corticosteroids may provide important benefits in patients with exacerbations of COPD. A recent clinical trial 32 involving 271 patients in Veterans Affairs hospitals showed that steroid therapy resulted in moderate improvement of clinical outcomes, with shorter hospital stays and increases in FEV 1 . The fact that there were no significant differences between patients treated for two weeks and those treated for eight weeks justifies the use of a shorter course of corticosteroids to reduce the occurrence of adverse effects. Adverse effects can include hyperglycemia, secondary infection and behavioral changes. 33

mg/day inhaled via jet nebulizer either once daily or divided into 2 doses. The maximum manufacturer recommended total dose is 1 mg/day. The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel defines low dose therapy for budesonide inhalation suspension as mg/day, medium dose therapy as 1 mg/day, and high dose therapy as 2 mg/day for children ages 5 to 11 years. Titrate to the lowest effective dose once asthma stability is achieved. Prolonged use of high doses, ., 2 mg/day, may be associated with additional adverse effects.

Whether airway hyperresponsiveness is a symptom of airway inflammation or airway remodeling, or whether it is the cause of long-term loss of lung function, remains controversial. Some investigators have hypothesized that aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory therapies improves the long-term course of asthma beyond their salutary effects on parameters of asthma control and rates of exacerbation over time. 13 This contention has been supported by an observational study 14 that found long-term exposure to ICS was associated with an attenuation of the accelerated decline in lung function previously reported in asthmatics; more studies are required to substantiate these findings.

I was diagnosed of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2012 at the age of 63.  I had been a heavy smoker, my symptoms started out with dry cough and shortness of breath, i ended up in the hospital, on a ventilator. I should have known it was coming, but like most smokers, thought it would never happen to me. My COPD got significantly worse and unbearable because of my difficulty catching breath. Last year, i started on a natural COPD Herbal therapy from NewLife Herbal Clinic, i read a lot of positive reviews from patients who used the treatment and i immediately started on it. I had great relief with this herbal treatment. I breath very much better now, no case of shortness of breath or chest tightness since treatment.
